脂質は、エネルギー源や生体膜成分として利用されるだけでなく、シグナル分子として宿主の生体機能に大きな影響を与えることが近年の研究により判ってきています。更に食事より摂取した脂質は、宿主が有する代謝を経て様々な脂肪酸代謝物に変換されるだけでなく、腸内細菌による代謝により、様々な修飾を受けることも判ってきています。
NOSTERは京都大学の小川順教授および岸野重信准教授らとの共同研究で、腸内細菌には宿主とは異なる脂質代謝経路が存在し、食事由来の脂質から特異な脂肪酸代謝物が産生され、多様な生理活性を有していることを見出しました11)。現在、腸内細菌の脂質代謝を活用して、これらをオリジナルの脂質代謝物ライブラリーとして構築しており、新たな治療基盤の確立を目指しています。
